Did you know that today might be John Browning's birthday? Then again, it might not be; he could have been born on January 21 instead. No one knows for sure.

Born in the cold of the Utah winter in January of 1855, few in his devout Mormon family would have suspected that the young John Moses Browning would grow up to be one of the most famous gunsmiths and firearms designers in American history. His works for his own company, as well as Winchester, Colt, Remington, Savage, and Fabrique Nationale made him arguably as famous as even the legendary Sam Colt.

To this day, many of his designs remain in popular use, both with civilians as well as military and law enforcement agencies. The Browning Superposed remains a trapshooter's favourite, the M1911 pistol still commands admiration amongst handgun enthusiasts and the Browning M2 heavy machine gun (affectionately known as "Ma Deuce" to the men who work with her) is currently the longest-serving machine gun in military history, having helped generations of ground pounders spread peace through superior firepower since 1921.
