What else happened today
  • 1895 — American gunfighter John Wesley Hardin was shot dead in the Acme Saloon in El Paso, Texas, by local lawman John Selman Sr.
  • 2001 — Cost of the Canadian Firearms Program more than doubles, to an estimated $527 million. The CFP says a major factor behind the ballooning costs is the difficulty keeping track of licence fees collected. This is blamed, in part, on the computer system used to process applications. And, according to the audit, that problem cannot be resolved without "massive change," including "significant investment" in the computer system.
  • 2010 — Edmonton Det. Randy Kuntz's survey of Canadian front line police officers reaches the 92% mark (2,410 out of 2,631) in favour of scrapping the country's long gun registry
