- 1866 — Edward M. Boxer, of the Royal Arsenal, Woolwich, England, receives his patent for the Boxer primer. Boxer primers are similar to Berdan primers, except the anvil is a separate piece that sits in the primer cup. Because of this, the primer pocket has the flash-hole centered, which makes little or no difference to the performance of the round, but it makes fired primers vastly easier to remove for reloading.
