1993 — American President Bill Clinton signs the Brady Bill into law. 1998 — The mandatory (and ineffective) five-day waiting period for handgun purchases, established in the 1993 Brady Handgun Violence Prevention Act, expires. It was replaced by a mandatory, computerized criminal background checking system to be conducted prior to any firearm purchase from a federally-licensed firearms dealer.
