The PGRS-1 muzzle brake is a muzzle brake manufactured by Bruce McArthur. It was tested by the United States Army and is in use currently (2008) with the U.S. Navy SEAL's.

The McArthur PGRS-1 muzzle brake was designed in the early 1980's by gunsmith and firearm inventor, Bruce McArthur owner of The Flint & Frizzen Gun Shop in Clarkston, Michigan. McArthur designed it to strip gases from the projectile before it leaves the muzzle brake. The brakes two-stage design has the second stage actually direct the gas at a slight angle to the rear. The PGRS-1 muzzle brake is made of corrosive resistant 304 stainless steel.

On the Flint & Frizzen Gun Shop website it is claimed the brake will on average reduce recoil by 60% to 75% (varies with the employed cartridge).[1] It is considered by many in the firearms industry to be the most efficient muzzle brake currently produced for calibers from .223 to .455.

The .408 Chey Tac Intervention heavy sniper rifle's light recoil is attributed to the McArthur PGRS-1 muzzle brake. The PGRS-1 muzzle brake is also made for common guns like the AR-15, M-16, FN FAL and for the M240 machine gun family, the M249 Squad Automatic Weapon family, FN D, FN BAR, Browning BAR and M1918 Browning Automatic Rifle both with or without the bipod bearing.[2]

The Bruce McArthur designed brake is the most effective muzzle brake on the market today. It reduced the recoil of a .30-06 Ruger M77 featherweight to such a degree it was comfortable to shoot in a t-shirt. Bill Van Dusen
