 By the early 1990s, the brass at the Pentagon had made up their minds that the M60, which had been America's do-everything GPMG since 1957, was getting a little long in the tooth. The guys with the stars wanted the replacement to be a "machine gun for the 21st century," whatever that was supposed to mean. On December 1, 1995, the announcement was made.
