- 1889 — American gunsmith John M. Browning built an early proof-of-concept prototype of the M1895 "potato digger" machine gun by modifying a Winchester lever action .44 caliber black powder cartridge rifle. Operation was via a lever located under the barrel, which operated the action when swung downwards. The lever was actuated by the muzzle blast operating upon it.[1] The bolt is a rear-locking tilting bolt, the first of its kind to be used on a machine gun.
