What else happened today
  • 1974 — The new "gun control" measures of the Jamaican government prompt the Time Magazine article "JAMAICA: Stalag in Kingston," which describes how the army cordons off whole areas of the island while police conduct invasive house-to-house searches without warrants. Anyone caught with an unlicensed gun or even a single bullet is tried under the provisions of the Gun Court Act. Under the terms of this draconian legislation, trials are held in a special court, proceedings are closed to public and press, there is no bail, and no jury is allowed.
  • 2005 — the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana issues a restraining order against the city of New Orleans, explicitly barring further firearms confiscations in the wake of Hurricane Katrina.
