* [[1889]] &mdash; American gunsmith [[John M. Browning]] built an early proof-of-concept prototype of the [[M1895]] "potato digger" [[machine gun]] by modifying a [[Winchester]] [[lever action]] .44 caliber [[black powder]] [[cartridge]] [[rifle]].  Operation was via a lever located under the barrel, which operated the action when swung downwards.  The lever was actuated by the [[muzzle blast]] operating upon it.<ref>Julian S. Hatcher (1962).
