Gunsopedia:Guidelines
Too many things are getting done too many different ways and it's getting confusing, even for me. This is totally a work in progress. --Dennis (talk) 12:44, 21 April 2013 (CDT)
[edit] Content
This is the part that needs to be dealt with first, since it's the most in danger of degenerating into a huge bowl of spaghetti logic.
Days, AOTDs and POTDs should be taken care of FIRST — front page changes are scheduled to be implemented by May 1 and we don't want to delay them if there's any way to avoid it. --Dennis (talk) 12:44, 21 April 2013 (CDT) |
[edit] Days
Each day should have its own page, like January 1.
- Pages for days should be created using the template found at User:Dennis/toolbox#days. Just copy the text in the codebox, paste it into the new day page, and follow the couple of directions. The rest is just filling in the blanks.
- Day pages should be titled "<month> <day>" with no leading zeros in the <day>.
- Days with only one digit in the date should have their {{DEFAULTSORT:}} value set to "<month> <day, with leading zero>"
- Day pages should simply be categorized under the appropriate month (eg., category:January). No other categorization should be required as it will be handled by transclusion via templates on the page.
- What else happened today should contain an unordered list of events associated with the date.
- Today in pictures should list all image files that link to the day in question.
[edit] Featured pages
- For featured articles
- The actual page being featured should be tagged with template:featured article (after it's been approved, of course), which will automatically file it in Category:Featured articles. Nothing else needs to be done with that particular page.
- For the AOTD
The article of the day (aka AOTD) is the little blurb that gets displayed on the front page and links to the featured article.
- AOTD titles should follow the format: "<date>/article" and be placed in the Main: namespace.
- AOTD pages should be made using template:AOTD.
- All AOTD pages should be placed in two categories: the appropriate month (eg., category:January) and category:Daily articles
- All dates should have an AOTD, even if there is no featured article for the day in question. AOTDs for days with no featured article should simply be tagged with template:AOTD missing and saved as is. No further action is required until a featured article is assigned for the day.
- For the POTD
The picture of the day (aka POTD) is the page that gets transcluded to the front page and contains the featured image for the given day.
- To create a POTD page, just copy the code at User:Dennis/toolbox#POTD and fill it in.
- POTD pages should be named "<date>/image"
- All POTD pages should be placed in two categories: the appropriate month (eg., category:January) and category:featured images
A POTD page that is actually a video and not an image should be duplicated on a VOTD page (see below). Yes, there should be two identical pages; this will be dealt with in the future. |
- For the VOTD
- We aren't going to actually use this... yet. Because of the large number of POTDs that are actually videos, a separate category will be created for these so that we'll have a head start for when each day has its own POTD and VOTD. The following are TEMPORARY measures, until we're ready to fully implement the whole VOTD thing:
The video of the day (aka VOTD) is the page that gets transcluded to the front page and contains the featured video for the given day.
- To create a VOTD page, just copy the code at User:Dennis/toolbox#VOTD and fill it in.
- VOTD pages should be named "<date>/video"
- All VOTD pages should be placed in two categories: the appropriate month (eg., category:January) and category:featured videos
- memo to me: what to do with removed/broken vids? --Dennis (talk) 12:44, 21 April 2013 (CDT)
