• 1869 — Hiram Berdan of New York receives receives U.S. Patent 82,587, which upgrades his previous 1866 design (U.S. Patent 53,388) by switching to brass shells and further modifying the process of installing the primer cap into the cartridge. Berdan primers have retained essentially the same functionally to the present day.
